Reiki Healing in Dublin: What Happens During a Session and Is It Right for You?

October 28, 2026

A Reiki session can be an unfamiliar experience if you have never tried energy healing before. You might have heard friends talk about it, come across it while exploring holistic therapies, or simply be looking for a quieter way to spend time focusing on your wellbeing.

Whatever brings you to Reiki, it helps to know what a session involves before booking an appointment. You should understand what happens, what you can reasonably expect and how to find a Reiki practitioner whose approach feels right for you.

At Ann Traynor Wellness Centre, Reiki treatment is available in Donaghmede, Dublin 13, alongside Reiki training and spiritual development services. Here's what to know if you're considering Reiki healing in Dublin for the first time.

What Is Reiki Healing?

Reiki is a Japanese energy-based practice that developed in the early twentieth century. It is commonly associated with relaxation, mindful attention and the idea of working with universal life energy.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner uses a series of hand positions, either placing their hands lightly on the body with permission or holding them just above it. The person receiving treatment remains clothed and can usually lie on a treatment bed or sit comfortably.

People experience Reiki differently. Some feel warmth or tingling, while others become deeply relaxed or notice very little physically during the session. There is no particular sensation you must experience for the session to be worthwhile.

It is also important to keep expectations realistic. Reiki has not been established as a treatment that cures medical conditions. It may be used as a complementary wellbeing practice, but it should never replace medical advice or appropriate healthcare.

Why Do People Look for Reiki Energy Healing?

People come to Reiki for different reasons, and the circumstances behind a booking can change over time.

Someone might arrange a session after a demanding period at work. Another person may be navigating a personal transition and want a quiet space to reflect. Others are simply curious about energy work and want to experience it for themselves.

Making time to slow down

Everyday life can leave little room to stop and pay attention to how you feel. A Reiki appointment creates dedicated time away from routine demands, with a calm environment and no requirement to keep talking.

For someone who finds it difficult to switch off, that pause alone can feel valuable. Some clients describe feeling calmer afterwards, although individual experiences vary.

Exploring emotional wellbeing

Reiki can form part of a wider personal wellbeing routine. People sometimes use sessions alongside meditation, counselling or other forms of self-care.

A practitioner should respect your boundaries and allow you to decide how much you want to share. You do not need to explain every aspect of your life to receive a session.

Exploring spiritual development

Reiki also appeals to people who are interested in energy work or spiritual practices. Receiving a treatment can be a starting point for learning about Reiki principles, meditation and the different levels of Reiki training.

You do not need to hold particular spiritual beliefs to ask questions or attend a session. What matters is that you understand the practice and feel comfortable with the person providing it.

What Happens During a Reiki Healing Session?

Knowing the process beforehand can make a first appointment feel much less daunting.

1. Arriving and discussing your needs

Your appointment should begin with an opportunity to explain what you are hoping to get from the session. You can ask questions about the treatment, mention any physical comfort requirements and discuss whether you prefer hands-on or hands-above-body techniques.

A professional Reiki practitioner should explain their approach clearly and obtain your consent before beginning.

2. Settling into a comfortable position

You generally remain fully clothed throughout the treatment. Depending on the practitioner and setting, you may lie on a treatment bed or sit in a chair.

The environment is usually quiet, giving you time to settle without the usual interruptions of the day.

3. Receiving the treatment

The practitioner moves through a sequence of hand positions, working gently and allowing you to relax. At Ann Traynor Wellness Centre, the Reiki treatment service describes a calm setting in which clients can lie down or sit comfortably while the practitioner works with energy points.

You can speak up at any point if you feel uncomfortable. Reiki should be a consensual experience, and you remain in control throughout.

4. Taking time afterwards

Once the treatment ends, you may want a few minutes to sit quietly before leaving. Some people feel refreshed; others feel sleepy or notice no obvious change.

There is no need to force an interpretation of what happened. Pay attention to your own experience and decide whether you would like to return.

How to Choose a Reiki Practitioner in Dublin

Choosing someone to work with is worth taking seriously. A clear explanation of the service and a respectful approach matter far more than dramatic promises about what a treatment will achieve.

When comparing practitioners, consider the following:

Training and experience: Ask about their Reiki training, the tradition they follow and how long they have been practising.
Consent and boundaries: You should know whether touch is involved and be able to decline any part of the treatment.
Clear communication: The practitioner should explain the session, answer questions and avoid guaranteeing results.
Comfort and accessibility: Check the location, appointment arrangements and whether the setting meets your needs.
Honest expectations: Be cautious of anyone who claims Reiki can diagnose illness, replace medical care or guarantee a cure.

A good practitioner will respect your decisions, including your choice not to book another session.

Reiki Treatment or Reiki Training: Which Should You Choose?

This depends on what you want from the experience.

A Reiki treatment allows you to receive a session from a practitioner. It can be a suitable starting point if you are curious about energy work but are not ready to study it yourself.

Reiki training takes a different approach. You learn the principles and techniques of Reiki, with the content depending on the level of the course. At Level 1, the emphasis is on understanding Reiki and developing a personal self-healing practice. Later levels introduce further techniques and practitioner-focused learning.

Ann Traynor Wellness Centre offers training from Level 1 through to Master Teacher level, allowing students to explore the practice further as their experience develops.

There is no need to decide on a full training pathway before experiencing Reiki. Starting with a treatment can help you understand what the practice involves and whether you want to explore it further.

Frequently Asked Questions About Reiki Healing

Does Reiki healing hurt?

Reiki is generally non-invasive and should not cause pain. You remain clothed, and you can ask the practitioner to adjust or stop the treatment at any time.

How many Reiki sessions will I need?

There is no universal number of sessions. Some people book occasionally when they want time to relax, while others choose regular appointments as part of their personal wellbeing routine. Your decision should depend on your experience, preferences and budget.

Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to work?

You can approach a session with curiosity without committing to a particular spiritual belief. However, claims about Reiki's effects should be viewed realistically because strong scientific evidence for specific healing outcomes remains limited.

Can Reiki replace medical treatment?

No. Reiki should not be used as a substitute for diagnosis, prescribed medication or treatment from a qualified healthcare professional. Speak to your healthcare provider about any medical concerns.

Can I learn Reiki after receiving a treatment?

Yes. Receiving Reiki does not generally prevent you from enrolling in a course. If you want to learn the foundations of the practice, explore the Reiki training courses at Ann Traynor Wellness Centre.
